Contraception Methods, Counselling & Advice

Helping you find contraception to suit your needs

We're here to help you find a contraceptive method that is right for you.

As part of your abortion treatment, we'll help you find a method of contraception that best suits your individual needs.

Following an abortion your fertility will return almost immediately. If you do not want to get pregnant after having an abortion it is important to have a contraceptive method in place as soon as possible. At your abortion appointment, you will be offered a range of contraceptive methods and we'll be there to advise and talk through your options with you.

Your fertility after an abortion

You can conceive again really quickly after an abortion; in fact an egg can be released from the ovary as soon as 5 days after your treatment so you could become pregnant again before your next period. We want to help you to choose the contraception that’s right for you after your abortion and offer we contraception counselling as part of your abortion care.

What are my contraception options after an abortion?

In this short video, Julia Hogan, contraception nurse consultant at MSI Reproductive Choices UK's, will talk about the gold standard of the contraception world: LARC methods. LARC stands for long acting reversible contraception, such as the implant, coil and injection.

These methods are fantastic because not only are they the most effective, they don’t interrupt sex and once they’re fitted you can forget about them. But they’re all reversible so, if you want to, you can plan a future pregnancy at a time that’s right for you.

"CHOICE" our online contraception counsellor

Our "Choice" Contraception Counsellor helps you find the best contraceptive options for you. Fill out a questionnaire about your lifestyle, preferences, needs and medical history, and you'll see a list of the most appropriate contraception options for you.

If you need help choosing the best contraceptive for you, try our online contraceptive counsellor "Choice": you can explore your options through a short series of questions to find the best contraception for your needs.

Not sure about which option is the right one for you? Consider a bridging method

If you haven’t quite made up your mind about contraception or we can’t give you what you want at the time - for example if you’ve had your abortion tablets posted to you - do consider having a temporary method to tide you over.  We call this a bridging method, to get you from now until you get the method of your choice without putting you at risk of an unplanned pregnancy. You could have contraceptive pills or the injection as a bridging method so please speak to our team about this.

At MSI Reproductive Choices we are here to help you choose the contraception that suits you best.

Following its reclassification, the mini-pill can now be sold directly by a pharmacist without a prescription.

What is the difference between the ‘morning after pill’ and the abortion pill?

The Morning After Pill: Emergency Contraception

The ‘morning after pill’ is an emergency contraceptive: though often called the morning after pill, it can actually be taken up to 96 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex to prevent a pregnancy. It is a progesterone-only hormone pill and works by delaying the release of an egg from an ovary, therefore preventing pregnancy. There is just one pill to take. The sooner you take the morning after pill, the greater the chances of avoiding pregnancy.

The Abortion Pill: Medical Abortion

A medical abortion (or “abortion pill” as it sometimes called) involves taking two different types of medicine - mifepristone and misoprostol - at different times, to end an existing pregnancy. At MSI Reproductive Choices UK, you can use this method of abortion up to 9 weeks + 6 days of pregnancy.
